“Good men (and women) are the stars, the planets of the ages wherein they live, and illustrate the times. “ ~Ben Jonson

It is an honor to tell you exciting news about this exemplary family dedicated to serving our country. Helen Toolan’s husband, Major General John A. Toolan, Jr. has been nominated and approved for his 3rd star and will become a Lt. General in September assuming duties as the Commanding General, First MEF (Marine Expeditionary Force) at Camp Pendleton, CA. Helen and John have been married 31 plus years.

Her daughter, Beth is now an Ensign, and passed her RN test. Beth will be starting at Walter Reed/Bethesda this summer. Helen’s son Sean did a “private” commissioning for his sister, Beth. John did the NROTC (The Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps) class commissioning for all of the graduates in the unit (about 25).

I’ve had the blessing of meeting Helen in person in the DC area twice. Her sweet disposition and kind and compassionate demeanor makes you feel you are meeting up with a dear friend you’ve known forever. Helen wrote a book blurb about, Love You More Than You Know Mother’s Stories About Sending Their Sons and Daughters to War. It is proudly displayed on the back book cover.

Besides her family, Helen’s other passion is the Semper Fi Fund.  This fund is a  501(c)(3) nonprofit, given an “A+” rating by the American Institute of Philanthropy and a “Four Star” rating by Charity Navigator, the highest rating for each organization.

Helen helped found this charity in 2004. Their mission: to provide critically injured and ill service members with immediate financial aid and quality of life solutions to lift the burdens of their new reality, so that each family could focus on their loved one’s recovery.

The Marine Corps motto, Semper Fidelis, translates to “always faithful.” The goal at the Semper Fi Fund is to embody this spirit to the fullest, and to always be there faithfully helping Heroes in need.  Helen says,” I will continue my work with the Semper Fi Fund…probably until I’m too old to walk!”

God bless Helen and her family for all that they do to serve our country. Their dedication shines bright as the stars and illustrates to each of us how to live our lives. They are always faithful.
